VoIP websites pushed down as Google pushes GrandCentral
As Google opens up GrandCentral many voip websites are experiencing poor returns from Google Adsense and higher costs from Google Adwords. Search engine positioning relative to Adwords use is still open for debate. Call it paranoia, economic downturn, or an algorithm change, there is no question that voip websites are making much less than in years past. Some believe it is because of GrandCentral. Others accuse Google of being self serving.
It doesn’t appear to be a problem with VoIP. In fact Fierce VoIP proclaims 2008 as the year that Internet telephony will come into its own. Some of the problems are tied to seasonal issues and the aftermath of holiday sales. Google revenue from VoIP websites has declined in January through March in both 2006 and 2007. While unexpected, and thus difficult to pay one’s taxes, the loss of revenue cannot be explained since website owners are not allowed to talk about revenue.
We always suspect that Google will one day cast aside small advertisers that made the Adwords and Adsense systems what they are today. Others make a strong argument for not putting all of one’s eggs in one basket, but alternatives often fail to deliver on promisses. Thus we suspect that Google will postion themselves, and GrandCentral, into the number one position while leaving other VoIP webmaster to find other ways to pay the bills.
